Living and working in Central Jakarta?

Indonesia is one of the most beautiful, fascinating and culturally absorbing nations in the world.
The capital city, Jakarta – The Big Durian – is a gateway to the natural and human treasures found throughout the islands. Jakarta is a dynamic metropolis, yet it is only a 60-90 minute boat ride to the Thousand Islands; a tranquil weekend getaway that is a great place for diving and snorkeling with its vibrant coral reefs, or just to relax and sunbathe on the beaches.
Jakarta itself has a lot to offer as well with all kinds of restaurants where you can try cuisine from all over the world. To say that the nightlife offers something for everyone is a bit of an understatement. There is an amazing array of choice ranging from quiet piano bars to the trendiest nightclubs. If sports are your thing, you will find numerous sporting facilities ranging from fitness clubs to paint ball! Are you into the Arts? Check out the local art exhibitions and some local theatre. Jakarta hosts the International Jazz festival each year. Are you a shopper? Jakarta has it all – from high end designer goods to local markets.
Indonesia is rich in art and culture. Religion and age-old tradition from the time of early migrants are intertwined with Western thoughts brought by Portuguese traders and Dutch colonists.
The basics principles that guide life include the concepts of mutual assistance or “gotong royong” and consultations or “musyawarah” to arrive at a consensus or “mufakat”. Derived from rural life, this system is based on the Old Dutch penal code, social life, as well as the rite of passage, is founded on customary or “adat” law which differs from area to area. “Adat” law has a binding impact on Indonesian life and it may be concluded that this law has been instrumental in maintaining equal rights for women in the community. Religious influences on the community are variously evident from island to island.
